Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
