The star has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the UK's grassroots music venues.

The star was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his third album People Watching was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

He has opted to give the cash to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Fender also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds assisted locations that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations received funding support in improving amenities and gear that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The idea that funds from performances in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.
