PSG Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice late to seize a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to seal a convincing shootout victory.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
