Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
