A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
